Can Breathing Training Decrease Sleep Apnea?
A recent study indicates strengthening of expiratory breathing muscles decreases sleep apnea. Using a specific device, the subjects in the study practiced at home 7 days/week, once a day, for 25 breaths for a duration of 12 weeks.
I believe this training is less than 10 min/day, maybe much less. The results were very promising and would suggest that increasing muscle strength decreases the propensity for collapsibility of the throat when breathing out, which is the most common physical vulnerability leading to an apnea.
