New Technology to Test for Sleep Apnea but not UARS
This device that goes by the name AcuPebble SA100 seems simple enough and incredibly easy to use. So, on the one hand, this great new technological solution will make it easier to diagnose sleep apnea. The bad news though is the device makes no mention of testing for UARS. As best I can determine, it seems the more we see technological advances making things simpler to diagnose sleep apnea, the manufacturers of these devices seem to know less and less about sleep-disordered breathing in general and UARS in particular. As a result, we get the benefit of more rapidly identifying those with sleep apnea, but for those suffering from the more subtle UARS condition, the device will inaccurately call their test results “negative.” These false negatives are a growing problem in the field of sleep medicine, and the patients are the biggest losers.
