President Biden's Sleep Apnea
You’ve probably heard very recently that the Commander-in-Chief just within the past few weeks began treating his sleep apnea, which apparently he may have been suffering from for 15 years. There are numerous media pieces covering the topic, but this article has a provocative quote from a sleep specialist, Dr. Joseph Krainin, who indicated Biden likely suffered from "a certain type of sleep apnea where his brain forgets to breathe during sleep."
Notwithstanding, in all the articles I’ve seen it only mentions the President is using a CPAP device. Thus, I’d like to know the source of the quote for suggesting his brain “forgets to breathe type of sleep apnea,” which of course is a reference to central sleep apnea (CSA).
If an 80 year-old man suffers from central sleep apnea with a known history of heart disease (i.e. atrial fibrillation), there are typically more serious conditions that may have caused this specific sleep breathing disorder. For example most elderly individuals with primary central sleep apnea are also suffering serious heart, lung or neurological diseases, which likely contributed to or actually caused the CSA.
If the condition is CSA, then CPAP is usually an effective treatment, and the patient would usually benefit more from oxygen therapy or the ASV device or both. Hopefully, the President is getting expert sleep medicine care.
